Gardeners could slow the rate of extinction by planting natives in their yards. In the NE, a violets feed fritillary caterpillars. Phlox supports 8 species of butterflies. Blueberry bushes (like the one above from White Flower Farm) support 288 species and thrive in big pots on a terrace. (Yea blueberries! My favorite fruit.)

Who speaks for the trees? They can speak for themselves, thank you very much, if you just give them a twitter account and hook them up with Botanicalls. Botanicalls Twitter DIY lets your plant tell you what it’s doing via online status updates that reach you anywhere in the world. When your plant needs water, it will post to let you know, and send its thanks when you show it love.
