a brand new garden! oh, i have been missing gardening since leaving my secret garden, aka the sky garden. I'm starting in containers since i'm in an apartment, but look forward to branching out soon. as of march 2009: - rosemary - lemonade fruits - myrtus ugni (nz cranberry/chilean guava) - chives - cilantro - clivia - red oak and cos lettuce UPDATE: 10/09 Now, we have a garden to garden! By the sea in beautiful Seatoun, Wellington. Watch this space as we make things grow.

I walk along and below the High Line almost every day and am delighted it's becoming a "grand public promenade" to be enjoyed by all residents and visitors in New York City. There's something special about it now though, while it's still relatively wild (and forbidden) — a ruin with a view. If you have the opportunity to check it out, I highly recommend it. Friends of the High Line is running a series of sketching workshops on the High Line with artist Ann DeVere. It's a blast, and looks like there are a few more spaces available in upcoming sessions, in case you're curious too.

high chai liquor + latkes chanukah on xmas holiday mashup! In 2005, the first night of Chanukah, scheduled by the lunar Jewish calendar, landed on Christmas day. Inspired by Toby's awesome Liquor & Latkes 2004, we continued the tradition and ran with the mashup theme presented by the calendar's synchronicity. High Chai Liquor & Latkes was born. Ace and Usha provided an amazing selection of chat (Indian snacks), interactive and delicious and honoring Chanukah's fried food tradition. Combined with Renee's lox, we had some hot hinjew fusion cuisine going on. Aloo Paratha + Smoked Salmon = Crazy Delicious! happy birthday durjoy "ace" bhattacharjya! Were we influenced by the maple syrup smell infiltrating Manhattan? When Ace, fan of "Iron Chef" and pancakes was approaching another trip around the sun without a party plan in place, Erik swung into action suggesting an open pancake competition. The results were delicious and hilarious, and as Ace says, "in birthdays and pancakes, everyone's a winner."

White with its illustrator Maira Kalman and composer Nico Muhly during the world premiere of a musical adaptation of this classic writing guide in the Rose Main Reading Room. What better place to bring to life the style guide that has aided countless writers, and whose capacious, book-lined span has been a sanctuary for writers and readers for almost one hundred years. With titles such as "Be Obscure Clearly!", "Overly Over"; and "Hyphens"; the songs are drawn from the humorous examples of poor writing and the pithy rules for proper grammar found in The Elements of Style. First with Owen Sheers, visiting us from London and reading to us from The Dust Diaries, which explores his English great-great-uncle's unorthodox missionary career in colonial southern Rhodesia. The selections Owen read from his first poetry collection, The Blue Book, melted off all my protective coatings. Next with Allison DeFrees, "a Texan and the liberal daughter of an unrepentant arms dealer. Her enchanting hand-crafted (and filled) with love book of poems entitled "Glass Bones" keeps making me laugh and cry out loud.
